Ohio, the Latest State to Approve Adult-Use Cannabis Legalization, on target for June 2024 Launch

Last year Ohio became the 24th state in the United States to approve a cannabis legalization ballot initiative, which went into effect on December 7. Despite opposition from the governor and some lawmakers, the initiative successfully passed with approximately 57 percent of the people’s vote, a significant step forward in the ongoing debate surrounding cannabis legalization in the country.

Maryland Cannabis Market Set for 2nd Round of Licensing

On March 14th, 2024 the State of Maryland’s Cannabis Administration (MCA) held its first round of new Adult-Use cannabis licensing. The results can be found here. The next round of Adult-Use cannabis licensing is tentatively scheduled to be announced in May 2024 and will be the first round of licensing that allows non-medical, non-social equity applicants to apply.

Maryland Officially Launches its Commercial Adult Use Market!

The State of Maryland’s Adult Use Cannabis Market opened up on July 1st, 2023, with a total of 95 medical dispensaries and 42 medical cannabis cultivators and processors successfully transitioned into the adult-use market. The Maryland market is already recording new record sales, with $87.4 million in sales recorded in the first month alone and $92 million in the second.

Adult-Use Cannabis Approved for Ohio’s November Ballot!

The Ohio Ballot Board voted yesterday to approve ballot language for an adult use cannabis legalization initiative that will be voted on in November. Known as “Issue 2”, and approved unanimously, would legalize and regulate cannabis for adults 21 and older. If passed, the initiative would allow adults to possess up to 2.5 ounces of cannabis and grow up to six plants for personal use. Some groups, including health associations and law enforcement, oppose the reform and have raised concerns about the lack of specific language on automatic expungements, while supporters believe that the initiative will bring significant revenue and stringent regulations to Ohio's cannabis market.

Germany One Step Closer to Adult-Use Legalization

Yesterday, August 16th, 2023, Germany’s Bundeskabinett passed a bill to legalize adult-use cannabis use and non-profit commercial cultivation. The Bundeskabinett is Germany’s executive branch and is composed of a coalition of Germany’s currently post powerful political parties: Scholz's Social Democratic Party, Alliance 90/The Greens, and the Free Democratic Party. So, while the legislation must still successfully pass through Germany’s parliament, the passage of the bill is all but assured. If the bill eventually does go through, the most populous EU nation will be joining a handful of other European countries to have loosened rules and regulations around cannabis.
